Advancing midwater science through community collaboration
The ocean’s twilight zone is central to global ocean processes, yet remains underrepresented in coordinated observing systems and international collaboration efforts. As DOOS continues to identify priority gaps, the midwater stands out as a critical frontier for collective action. In collaboration with JETZON, this breakout session will convene the community to discuss key scientific and technological gaps, and opportunities for stronger coordination. A central goal of the session is to gauge interest in and co-develop the vision for a potential community-driven working group focused on observing strategies for the mesopelagic. Through open discussion and community input, we aim to identify actionable priorities and build momentum toward sustained, collaborative efforts in midwater observation and science.
What is DOOS?
DOOS is a community-driven, international initiative strategically aligning the deep ocean observing community toward collective solution-based science. By building bridges across disciplines and communities, facilitating discussions between people/groups, and promoting the development of future leaders, DOOS elevates diverse global voices and tackles global deep-sea challenges. Our goal is to connect the best ideas from across the deep sea community to create broadly accessible solutions that maximize impact toward addressing global challenges. A key way DOOS moves the community forward toward creating broadly accessible, high impact solutions is through community-driven initiatives, which include working groups.
