This course is open to everyone who may need or want to better understand how to harness existing ocean science and knowledge to implement the BBNJ Agreement. More specifically, it has been designed to support early and mid-career professionals working in national institutions, services, and research centres related to the ocean.
Two months after the entry into force of the BBNJ Agreement and as the BBNJ PrepComm III is underway, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 - 2030) ('Ocean Decade') and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO's OceanTeacher Global Academy launch a new online course to support the global ocean community in using ocean science and knowledge to implement the BBNJ Agreement.
Featuring the contributions of over 80 world-leading ocean experts, the course includes three modules that cover:
- The historical background, core concepts and conventions underlying the the BBNJ Agreement
- The Agreement’s four main pillars: Marine genetic resources; Area-Based Management Tools, including Marine Protected Areas; Environmental Impact Assessments; and Capacity-building and the Transfer of Marine Technology
- The Agreement’s main implementation mechanisms
